Wedding Dress Alterations & Restyling

When to contact me to book your bridal fitting…

I can’t express how important it is that you arrange your fittings well in advance.

At least 6 months before or ideally a year in advance.

I get fully booked many months ahead, especially for wedding dates between February and October.

Of course you are welcome to get in touch anytime, even if your timescale is short and I can check my availability for you.

What to bring to your bridal fitting…

It is essential that you bring your wedding shoes, along with the correct underwear that you will wear with your dress on your wedding day to all fittings.

These will absolutely affect the fit of your gown.

If you are unsure or undecided on these items, then please let me know before your first fitting so we can decide on the best options for you.

Timescales…

I only take on a certain number of brides each calendar month so I can dedicate my time equally to everyone.

Where possible I aim for a slightly longer lead time from the first fitting to the final fitting during the busier months, between February and October, being around 10 or 12 weeks.

Outside these months I can easily do a shorter lead of time of 6 or 10 weeks.

Just to say that I can turn a dress around within 2 weeks or less should this be required, and I have availability.

How many fitting appointments are needed?

Most gowns will require 2 or 3 fitting appointments before a final collection appointment after your dress is steamed and pressed.

The first fitting is where we chat through all the details, and I will pin and take measurements, and this is all written down for you.

The second fitting is where things have happened to your dress, taking it towards the final stage. At this appointment expect to see hand tacking, maybe loose threads and unpicked areas!

Once your alterations are complete there will be an appointment for you to collect your gown and have a final try on.

I always hand press and steam gowns so they are perfect for your wedding day.

Remember, every gown is unique in its fitting, and sometimes extra fitting appointments may need booking, so it is vital to be flexible with your appointments.

“There is an art to fitting your bridal gown. A bridal seamstress has a very comprehensive skill set on top of being technically proficient and having an eye for the little details.

I know how a gown is constructed and sewn together and have worked on literally thousands of dresses over many years and every one of them, just like you, is unique.”

Bespoke additions &  Restyling changes

This is a wonderful way to make your dress truly unique.

I have a huge range of fabrics and laces available that will compliment your dress and make any changes work beautifully.

If you have a particular element, you would like changed or added,

or maybe you have a whole new vision for your dress, get in touch.

I can advise on various ways to create a particular style that you may be looking to accomplish.

You can bring along images to show me your ideas.

  • Adding sleeves or straps
  • Making a matching veil, bolero or coverup
  • Skirt or dress overlays, Bespoke neckline changes
  • Reducing or adding skirt fullness
  • Making a statement bow or adding corset back,
  • Or a complete remake!

How much do wedding dress alterations cost?

I can give you a guide to costs as this question is not easy to answer exactly, without seeing you in your dress.

Many factors involved can affect the cost, from the fabric, the fit, the style and generally how much you need doing to it.

However, I appreciate you need a rough figure to factor into your wedding budget.

Prices start from £280 and can go up to £600+ however most bridal gowns average between £350-£500, for the usual types of alterations.

The usual types of alterations are adjusting the bust and waist area, shortening the hem length at the front, adding bra cups and a bustle on the train.

Bridesmaid and Occasion wear alterations average from £30 to £130, as a guide.
